An explosive new play about love, jealousy and a woman’s right to choose.

‘In our world women marry only once.’

‘Not here, brother, not here.’

It’s Aya’s wedding day – her third. Her current two husbands aren’t too fussed; in a society in which there are few women, that’s just what happens. But as the household prepares for the third wedding feast, a stranger arrives – one who threatens to challenge everything they believe in. Sharmila Chauhan weaves an extraordinary tale of love and wonder against a backdrop of modern rural India.

The Husbands toured nationally in February and March 2014. The tour began at the Theatre Royal Plymouth,  followed by tour dates at MAC Birmingham,  Leicester Curve,  Theatre Severn Shrewsbury, Arena Theatre, Wolverhampton, Roses Theatre, Tewkesbury,  Ludlow Assembley Rooms and ending with a 12 night run at London's Soho Theatre. The show was seen by over 3,000 audience members.

This dynamic production follows the household as they prepare for the wedding – from preparing luxury food, to the sacrifice of the lamb; from the dressing of the bride to the dance to end all dances; this is an exuberant, theatrical piece of theatre, both challenging and playful.

“The Husbands is nothing if not thought-provoking.”
